SUSPECTED MOTORCYCLE SNATCHER BURNT TO DEATH BY MOB IN MAKURDI

A suspected motorcycle snatcher was set ablaze by an angry mob on Tuesday along Ibrahim Kashim Road in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred after two passengers hired a commercial motorcyclist, popularly called okada rider, to take them to the railway quarters area of the city. On arrival, another accomplice reportedly joined them, pretending to pay the fare, but instead attacked the rider with scissors, stabbing him several times.
The attackers allegedly attempted to flee with the motorcycle, but one of them fell off and was overpowered by the crowd, who dragged him to the main road and set him on fire.
When journalists arrived at the scene, officials of the Benue State Sanitation Agency, in the company of police operatives, were seen evacuating the charred remains.
Confirming the incident, police spokesperson SP Udeme Edet said the suspect had only recently been released from the Makurdi Correctional Centre, where he served a sentence for a similar offence.
“Immediately we received the report, the command dispatched officers to the scene, but before they arrived, the suspect had already been set ablaze. Our findings revealed that he had just been released from prison after serving a term for the same crime,” Edet said.
While condemning the mob action, she warned that the police would no longer tolerate jungle justice in the state, urging residents to always hand over suspects to law enforcement authorities.
