Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kano Command, have arrested six suspected vandals for allegedly stealing electricity equipment in the Hayin Da’e area of Hotoro, Tarauni Local Government Area.
The Command’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the operation was carried out following credible intelligence from local vigilantes.
“The suspects were apprehended with vandalised transformer cables believed to have been removed from a transformer at midnight in the area,” Abdullahi said.
The suspects were identified as Muhammad Yusuf, 18; Muhammad Sani Adamu, 19; Umar Musa, 19; Ahmed Auwal, 20; Muhd Yusuf, 28; and Usman Ali, 19, all residents of the community.
Preliminary investigations, according to the Corps, revealed that the suspects had been terrorising residents of Hayin Da’e, Farawa Kwanar Yashi, and Hotoro Eastern Bypass with repeated cases of burglary, theft, and vandalism of electricity installations.
“The Corps has since launched an investigation with a view to making further arrests associated with the crime, with confessional statements already obtained from the suspects. They will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” Abdullahi added.
He also said the Kano Command, under the leadership of Commandant Shafi’u Abdulmumini, had intensified surveillance and patrols across the state to rid communities of vandals and other criminal elements.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the NSCDC in Gombe State on Monday paraded an 84-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy for allegedly vandalising power transmission cables. They were caught with several metres of aluminium cables believed to have been stolen.
