GOVERNOR OBOREVWORI SHOWS SUPPORT FOR MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has reiterated his administration’s dedication to facilitating the successful establishment of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Kwale.
The governor made this commitment on Tuesday during a visit from the Governing Council and Management of the university, headed by its Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Salisu Banye, at the Government House in Asaba.
Characterizing the university as a legacy initiative, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that it would greatly improve access to quality education and healthcare services within the state.
He remarked, “As trailblazers, you bear the significant responsibility of solidifying the foundation of this university. The journey ahead necessitates sacrifice, diligence, commitment, perseverance, ingenuity, and altruism. I am impressed with the advancements you have achieved thus far, and I encourage you to maintain this momentum. ” He assured that his administration would persist in offering essential support, including infrastructure and logistical resources, to ensure the university’s seamless inauguration.
The government has already sanctioned the utilization of the General Hospital in Kwale as the initial teaching hospital, while initiatives are in progress to extend electricity supply to the university campus.
Oborevwori also reflected on previous obstacles of limited admission opportunities, which prompted the creation of additional state-owned universities during his tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. “Currently, we are the sole state in Nigeria with four state-owned universities, all of which are flourishing and alleviating admission pressures. With this new federal university, more opportunities will emerge for our youth,” he added.
Dr. Banye revealed that the university, founded on March 6, 2023, is preparing for the resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC), which will permit it to enroll students in Medicine and Allied Health Sciences. He requested further governmental assistance to fulfill critical accreditation standards and support infrastructure development, including access roads, drainage systems, fencing, accommodations, and a reliable power supply.
The Pro-Chancellor praised Oborevwori’s vision and leadership, expressing confidence that with his ongoing support, the university would evolve into a center of excellence and a national benchmark for effective medical education.
