Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his willingness to retreat in favor of a younger candidate if he does not succeed in the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

In a discussion with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, Atiku, who represented the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, stated that it is premature to ascertain whether he will pursue a candidacy, but emphasized that unifying the opposition within the ADC is his primary focus.

“This is only the beginning. Our priority is to establish the party and gain a strong following.

“If I run for office, and a young man defeats me, I will accept that.

“The party we have joined now prioritises youth and women.”

He refuted rumors suggesting that he might engage in dual allegiances between the ADC and PDP, asserting, “No, I’m not known for that. If I say I am going one way, I will go that way.”

It is noteworthy that the 78-year-old resigned from the PDP in July, citing irreconcilable differences and a shift in the party’s path away from its foundational principles.

In a correspondence dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku officially concluded his membership in the party with immediate effect.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he remarked.
