DELTA POLICE FREE KIDNAPPED WOMAN, NAB DRUG SUSPECTS
The Delta State Police Command has successfully freed a kidnapped woman and apprehended two alleged drug traffickers in two distinct operations executed in various locations throughout the state.
In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, on Tuesday, it was detailed that these incidents transpired on Saturday in Ovian Aladja and Effurun GRA, respectively.
In the initial operation, law enforcement officers from the Ovian Aladja Division acted upon an emergency call after a man reported the abduction of his spouse by armed individuals in the early hours of that day.
The command disclosed that the man, whose identity has been withheld, informed officers that the incident took place around 2 a.m. while the family was asleep.
Edafe reported that the assailants allegedly broke into their residence, confiscated valuables, and abducted his wife.
“The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Friday Ekundayo, promptly organized and led a team of operatives from the division, pursuing the kidnappers with the aim of ensuring the safe recovery of the woman and arresting the perpetrators,” the command stated.
The team allegedly tracked the suspects to a forest near the Iyara community, where the abductors were said to have released their victim due to mounting pressure from the pursuing officers.
“Through persistent efforts from the DPO and his team, the kidnappers were compelled to abandon the victim and flee.
“The victim was rescued unharmed and has since been reunited with her family, while a manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing,” Edafe added.
In a separate operation conducted on the same day, the command’s Crack Squad stationed in Asaba raided a suspected narcotics hideout in Effurun GRA, Uvwie Local Government Area, resulting in the arrest of two men.
The apprehended suspects, identified as 33-year-old Igwe Samson and 39-year-old Abalum Sunday, were detained around 5 a.m. following credible intelligence gathered by law enforcement.
Officers intercepted a Sienna vehicle purportedly utilized by the suspects to transport contraband substances, and upon conducting a search of the vehicle, numerous quantities of illegal drugs were recovered.
The recovered items included 450 bottles of codeine syrup, 188 bottles of barcadine, 208 sachets of tramadol 100mg, 300 sachets of swinol, 100 sachets of tramadol 500mg, 50 sachets of rophynol, and a substantial bag of a substance suspected to be cannabis.
The command emphasized that this operation was part of a heightened crackdown on the sale and distribution of illegal narcotics, which have been associated with an increase in violent crimes and substance misuse among youths.
“Initial investigations indicated that the suspect has been involved in this business for approximately two years, typically sourcing the drugs in Onitsha and favoring nocturnal travel to evade detection,” the command revealed.
Edafe further disclosed that efforts are underway to capture the suppliers and other accomplices implicated in the illicit drug distribution network throughout the region.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, praised the rapid response of the DPO and his team, noting that their professionalism averted what could have been another tragic incident.
He guaranteed inhabitants that the authority would not waver in its endeavors to render the state inhospitable for criminals, cautioning that law enforcement will persist in their pursuit of abductors, cult members, and other transgressors throughout Delta neighborhoods.
Abaniwonda further praised the Elite Squad for their intelligence-driven initiative, cautioning against the perils of narcotics trafficking and misuse, characterizing it as a significant catalyst of criminal activity in the community.
