The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has renewed its demand for the immediate reinstatement of five doctors dismissed by the management of Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja (FTHL), Kogi State, over alleged union activities.

The doctors were reportedly sacked in October 2024, May and August 2025 by the hospital’s management under the leadership of the former Chief Medical Director, Dr. Olatunde Alabi.

Addressing a press conference in Lokoja on Tuesday, NARD President, Dr. Muhammed Suleiman, said the association is demanding justice, noting that the affected doctors have been without jobs for over a year.

“Today is the 18th day of the 30-day ultimatum that NARD gave to the Federal Government to meet our demands, among which is the reinstatement of five doctors sacked at FTH Lokoja,” Suleiman stated.

The association’s demands also include the payment of unpaid promotion and salary arrears spanning five years, as well as the settlement of outstanding 25 and 35 per cent increment entitlements.

Suleiman highlighted the worsening state of the country’s health system, pointing out that Nigeria currently has one doctor attending to over 9,000 patients, far above the global standard of one doctor to 600 patients.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene urgently, warning that failure to act could lead to a national health crisis.

“We need the sacked doctors back to reduce workloads in the hospital. NARD is ready to discuss with the Federal Government to reinstate sacked doctors,” he said.

Suleiman also called for the continuation of collective bargaining between the government, doctors, and other health workers as a strategy to stem the tide of brain drain in the sector.

He commended the hospital’s new Acting CMD for showing willingness to engage with NARD and appealed for collaboration to ensure the reinstatement of the affected doctors.

NARD had earlier issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Federal Government during its 45th Annual General Meeting to address unresolved welfare and policy issues affecting doctors nationwide.
