Two students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, were injured during a late-night robbery at off-campus hostels on Monday, as rising insecurity grips student communities in the area.

The attack, which took place around 11 p.m. on October 20, 2025, saw the assailants — armed with cutlasses and a gun — invade two hostels, breaking windows and carting away valuables including mobile phones, laptops, and cash.

Videos obtained by the media showed bloodstains on a room floor and a shattered burglar-proof window.

A student identified as Daniel, who witnessed the incident, said the armed robbers attacked two hostels, injuring students and firing shots into the air as they fled.

“One of the students who refused to hand over his phone was cut with a cutlass. They took phones, MacBooks, and other belongings. When we mobilised to chase them, they shot into the air and escaped,” he said, adding that this was not the first attack on student residences.

Officers of the Students’ Union Government reportedly arrived at the scene before the police and rushed the injured students to the university health centre for treatment.

In a statement signed by the Students’ Union President, David Adelani; PRO, Oreoluwa Olowosile; and Secretary-General, Habeeb Isa, the union decried the worsening insecurity around student hostels, noting that a student, Dorcas Oseghale, has been missing for over two months, and another narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt on Sunday night.

The Great Ife Students’ Representative Council (SRC) also condemned the rising insecurity, describing the situation as a “climate of fear and uncertainty.” It criticised the state government and security agencies for failing to act decisively despite recurring incidents.

“This is not an isolated event; it is a continuation of a frightening trend that has persisted for far too long while those responsible for protecting lives and property fold their arms in shameful silence,” the SRC said.

The council demanded urgent action from Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, and the Divisional Police Officer of Moore Division. It also urged the university management to expand on-campus accommodation to reduce students’ vulnerability.

Efforts to reach the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.

When contacted, Osun Police PRO, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command was not aware of the attack and advised students to lodge a formal complaint for immediate action.

Attacks on off-campus hostels have become a growing security concern across Nigerian universities, with students in institutions such as Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and University of Ibadan previously reporting similar incidents.

Security analysts have attributed the surge in such crimes to inadequate campus housing, poor lighting, limited police patrols, and spillover of urban crime into student communities.
