KANU MEETS LEGAL TEAM AHEAD OF DEFENSE IN TERRORISM TRIAL
Detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday concluded a private meeting with his legal team in preparation for the defence phase of his terrorism trial.
The meeting, which held inside the courtroom of the Federal High Court in Abuja, was granted by Justice James Omotosho following a request from Kanu’s lead counsel, former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN).
Agabi had earlier informed the court that it was difficult to have confidential discussions with his client at the DSS facility due to possible monitoring. In response, the judge approved a private session between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Tuesday, October 22, with only Kanu and his legal representatives present.
The closed-door meeting, which lasted several hours, was aimed at finalising strategies ahead of the commencement of Kanu’s defence, scheduled to begin on October 23.
Justice Omotosho had last week granted Kanu’s legal team six consecutive days to open and close their case as part of an accelerated hearing schedule.
Kanu is expected to begin presenting his defence on Wednesday, during which his team may call witnesses and present arguments following the close of the prosecution’s case.
