KADUNA COURTS SHUT DOWN, JUDICIARY WORKERS DOWN TOOLS OVER AUTONOMY DEMAND
On Monday, courts in Kaduna State were closed as the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) initiated an indefinite strike to advocate for various demands, notably the enforcement of financial autonomy for the judiciary.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal and State High Courts, the Upper Shari’a Court, as well as the Customary and Magistrates’ Courts were secured, featuring banners at the entrances proclaiming, “JUSUN Kaduna State chapter commences strike. ”
At the Shari’a court in Magajin Gari, conditions mirrored those elsewhere, with courtrooms remaining shuttered.
Nonetheless, some court employees were observed outside the courthouse, assisting clients requiring affidavits.
According to NAN, on October 23, an announcement regarding the indefinite strike, signed by the union’s secretary, Nasiru Haruna, was disseminated.
JUSUN articulated that this industrial action was prompted by the state government’s neglect to address numerous communications, including a demand letter dated September 1 and an ultimatum issued on October 9, 2025.
The union asserted that all attempts to achieve a conciliatory resolution had been disregarded, compelling them to cease work.
The union enumerated its demands, which include the establishment of financial autonomy for the judiciary in accordance with the amended 1999 Constitution, the implementation of consequential salary modifications, and the disbursement of withheld salaries for April and May 2021.
Additional requests encompass the settlement of nine years’ worth of arrears related to a 20 percent salary component dating from 2016 to the present, the resolution of leave and transport grant arrears spanning nine years, and the payment of outfit allowances for judicial personnel.
The union revealed that the resolution to initiate the strike was made during an emergency meeting convened on October 13.
“An indefinite strike action will commence on Monday. All operations of the Kaduna State Judiciary will be halted. All personnel are to withdraw their services until further notice,” stated the announcement in part.
It instructed all courts and judicial entities, including the High Courts, Sharia Courts, Customary Courts, and other judicial offices statewide, to ensure full adherence to the strike directive.
