The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has dismissed reports of irregularities in the recent promotion exercise within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), insisting that the process was transparent, fair, and strictly merit-based.

Egbetokun made the clarification during the decoration ceremony of 19 newly promoted senior officers, including a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) and other top-ranking personnel, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Reacting to media reports alleging favouritism and corruption in the promotion process, the police chief said there was no scandal in the system and described such claims as baseless attempts to tarnish the image of the Force.

“In recent months, certain individuals have attempted to cast shadows on the credibility of our promotion process. But truth stands taller than rumours,” he said.

The IGP explained that promotions under his leadership were awarded based on professional competence, integrity, and performance, not on sentiments or influence. He maintained that the Police Force operates a clear and accountable system designed to reward officers who demonstrate excellence and dedication.

“What we have is a system that rewards diligence, discipline, and results. Nepotism or favouritism has no place in our promotion process,” he stressed.

Egbetokun urged the newly promoted officers to see their elevation as a call to greater responsibility and service, adding that their performance and conduct would reflect the overall image and credibility of the Force.

He charged them to embrace community-based and intelligence-driven policing strategies to effectively tackle evolving security threats across the country.

“The landscape of crime is changing. Nigerians expect a police force that is smarter, more responsive, and deeply connected to the people,” he added.

The IGP’s remarks come amid criticisms of the NPF’s promotion system by some serving and retired officers. However, his reassurance reflects the current administration’s commitment to meritocracy, professionalism, and transparency in police leadership.

Egbetokun reaffirmed that the Police under his command remains focused on institutional reforms aimed at improving morale, operational efficiency, and public trust.
