The Kogi State Polytechnic has uncovered a certificate racketeering and document falsification syndicate involving nine suspects, including staff members and purported students of the institution.
Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Ogbo, disclosed this during a press conference on Friday in Lokoja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He revealed that five staff members have been suspended, while four individuals claiming to be students have been arrested in connection with the alleged forgery scheme.
“Only recently, the management uncovered the syndicate involving some students, non-students, and a few dishonest staff members accused of manipulating academic records in clear disregard of due process and institutional values,” Ogbo said.
The Rector stated that the Polytechnic’s management discovered 30 forged original certificates that had reportedly been sold to unsuspecting buyers.
“The suspects forged National Diploma results in the name of Kogi State Polytechnic and had the temerity to apply for Higher National Diploma admission in the same institution using the forged ND results,” he added.
Ogbo explained that the fraud was uncovered through intelligence reports and routine verification exercises conducted by the institution’s Admission, ICT, and Security Units.
“These individuals compromised our security arrangements and tampered with the security features on our Statements of Result,” he said, noting that the suspects also colluded with result processors to falsify academic records for students with multiple carryovers who had failed to complete their examinations.
“Such criminal acts represent an assault on the credibility and reputation of our institution, and they cannot be allowed to go unpunished,” the Rector warned.
Ogbo assured the public and stakeholders that the Polytechnic remains committed to maintaining the integrity of its certification processes, adding that its quality assurance and security mechanisms remain fully active and uncompromised.
