Men of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a social media content creator, Osarobo Omoyemen popularly known by her online alias “Madam Oil Rice” for allegedly staging a false kidnapping incident to gain online followers.
In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said Omoyemen claimed on social media that she was abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City and later rescued by police operatives who allegedly detained her at Akpata Police Station and extorted N10,000 as bail.
However, Yamu disclosed that following immediate investigation, the story was found to be entirely fabricated.
“Findings revealed that the entire story was completely fabricated and deliberate. During interrogation, the 24-year-old female suspect confessed that she staged the incident solely to generate online content and attract followers to her TikTok page,” the statement read.
The command noted that the content was “misleading and capable of inciting hostility against the police and triggering unnecessary tension within the state.”
Yamu added that the suspect deleted an earlier video where an accomplice was heard urging viewers to follow her page exposing the motive behind the false alarm.
Omoyemen was charged to court on 20 November 2025, and efforts are underway to apprehend her collaborators.
“This action is intended to serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt to misuse social media to create panic or disrupt public peace,” Yamu stated.
The command warned against the circulation of fake news capable of causing public unrest and advised residents to verify information before sharing.
He reiterated the police’s commitment to maintaining peace, security, and public safety across Edo State.
