The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State has confirmed that 50 students abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara LGA, have escaped from captivity and returned safely to their families.

The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, chairman of the state CAN chapter and Catholic bishop of the Kontagora Diocese. Yohanna said the students regained their freedom between Friday and Saturday before quietly reuniting with their families.

According to him, the pupils were unable to return directly to the school due to fear and shock, prompting school officials to contact their parents to confirm their safe return.

“The pupils escaped between Friday and Saturday and have reunited with their parents as they could not return to the school after they escaped,” Yohanna said.

“We were able to ascertain this when we decided to contact and visit some parents.”

Providing further details, Yohanna disclosed that: The school has 430 pupils, with 377 boarders and 53 day students.

Aside from the 50 escaped students, 141 pupils were not abducted.

Currently, 236 pupils, 3 staff children, 14 secondary school students, and 2 staff making a total of 253 persons remain in captivity.

He called for calm and continued prayers as rescue efforts intensify.

“We urge everyone to remain calm and prayerful as we collaborate with security agencies, community leaders, and government authorities to ensure the safe and swift return of all abductees.”

The development follows rising concerns over the abduction incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday during an attack by armed bandits on the school.

Efforts to rescue the remaining victims are ongoing.
