Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed a viral report alleging that he claimed the United States targeted him in an attack on Nigerian soil.

In a post shared on his verified Facebook page, Gumi described the report as entirely false, stressing that he neither made such a statement nor believed it was possible.

He clarified that the misunderstanding likely stemmed from a lecture he delivered at a mosque, where he referenced a past security threat associated with Boko Haram.

According to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, he merely narrated how he was informed in August 2012 of a plot by Boko Haram to assassinate him.

He explained that the attempt was foiled after the attackers were killed when the explosive device they were carrying detonated near his residence.

The cleric emphasised that he is presently safe and living peacefully with his family, without fear or intimidation.

Gumi also urged media organisations that published the report to retract the story and issue a public apology.
