BUA Cement Plc has announced plans to build a cutting-edge cement production line in Sokoto with a capacity of three million tonnes per annum, representing a $240 million investment aimed at expanding output and supporting infrastructure development across West Africa.

The project, to be executed in partnership with Chinese engineering and construction firm CBMI, will raise BUA Cement’s total annual production capacity to 20 million tonnes when completed, further strengthening its foothold in Nigeria’s cement industry. The deal extends a 15-year collaboration between both companies, during which CBMI has delivered projects totaling 14 million tonnes of cement capacity across BUA Cement’s Obu and Sokoto plants.

BUA Cement’s Sokoto facility enjoys a strategic advantage as the only cement plant in Nigeria’s North-West region, positioning the company to efficiently serve domestic markets as well as neighbouring landlocked countries.

The expansion is also supported by dedicated energy infrastructure. A 700-tonne-per-day mini LNG plant currently under construction in Kogi State is expected to supply clean and reliable power to the new Sokoto line and existing facilities. This integrated approach underscores a broader shift among Nigerian industrial firms toward combining energy generation with heavy manufacturing to improve efficiency and lower carbon emissions.
