Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians to embrace tolerance and peaceful coexistence, stressing that the nation’s unity and shared heritage outweigh divisive tendencies.

Shettima made the call on Wednesday in Jos, Plateau State, during a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Royal Highness Jacob Gyang Buba.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President said Nigeria possesses the potential to become one of the world’s greatest nations if its citizens learn to live together in peace.

“We are all connected one way or the other. What binds us together supersedes what separates us,” Shettima said, emphasising the importance of unity in nation-building.

He described traditional rulers as critical stakeholders in fostering peace and stability, noting that they are not only custodians of culture but also respected voices who help promote harmony within their communities.

“They help in upholding society by preaching peace among their subjects,” he added.

The Vice President, who was in Plateau State for the grand reception of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other political leaders into the All Progressives Congress (APC), also commended the improving relationship between the governor and the party’s National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda.

According to Shettima, the political realignment would strengthen peace, stability, and development in the state.

“There can be no development without peace. With their coming together, the state will enjoy more peace and the dividends of democracy,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the cooperation would further enhance Plateau State’s image and contribute to lasting peace in the state and across the country. Shettima also thanked the Plateau State Government and residents for the warm reception accorded him and his entourage.

Earlier, Governor Mutfwang praised the working relationship between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, describing it as beneficial to national development.

In his remarks, the Gbong Gwom Jos called for improved security across Plateau State and other parts of the country, while acknowledging the efforts of security agencies.

“There is need for more security and true reconciliation,” the monarch said, stressing that both Islam and Christianity reject violence and bloodshed.

He described the political realignment in the state as a positive development for Plateau State and Nigeria.

The Vice President’s entourage included the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda; Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase; and members of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs.
