LECTURER CALLS ON YOUTHS TO EMBRACE AGRICULTURE, NO MATTER THEIR COURSE OF STUDY

Professor Mandu Essien-Ibok, of the Fisheries and Aquatic Environmental Department at the University of Uyo and Vice Chairman of Vika Integrated Farms in Akwa Ibom State, has urged everyone—including graduates—to venture into agriculture, regardless of their field of study.
Prof. Ibok gave the advice during a visit to Vika Integrated Farms in Uyo, a facility that serves as a training hub for farmers, students, and corporate organizations across Nigeria. He described agriculture as a “cash cow that never goes out of season,” stressing that with proper training and attention to planting schedules, farming can be highly profitable.
“We plant virtually everything, and they are all thriving. So I’ll tell you sincerely: whatever course you studied, come into agriculture. You’ll enjoy it, just know the timing and follow the seasons,” he said.
Speaking alongside him, Dr. Ade Essien-Ibok, a medical doctor, highlighted the health benefits of farming, particularly gardening. She noted that it encourages physical activity and helps counter sedentary lifestyles.
“Most health challenges we face stem from inactivity. Engaging in activities like gardening burns calories, provides exercise, and promotes overall well-being,” she explained.
