In a move aimed at curbing rising cases of banditry and kidnapping spreading from Kwara to Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has called on the police to lift the ban on Amotekun operations in the state.

The call follows past controversies surrounding the Osun Amotekun corps, which came under investigation after its operatives were accused of excessive force in Akinlalu, resulting in the deaths of four civilians and the arrest of some field commandants.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Friday, Governor Adeleke emphasized the urgent need to allow Amotekun to resume operations to protect residents. He highlighted that recent kidnappings in Ora-Igbomina are partly due to a shortage of security personnel, creating a security vacuum.

“The Amotekun service has developed expertise in containing threats, especially in rural border areas. The police shutdown of their operations has created a gap that bandits and criminals are exploiting,” the statement said.

Governor Adeleke urged the Inspector General of Police to unseal Amotekun operations immediately and to ensure that detained officers are charged in court. “Closing down Amotekun exposes the Osun people to serious risks. Those in detention should be charged after several months of incarceration. Any further delay will jeopardize the safety and security of our people,” he added.

He stressed that the move was necessary to ensure the collective protection of rural communities and to prevent further criminal infiltration across the state.
