The presidency has called for an investigation and possible prosecution of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, following his alleged confession of illegal wiretapping of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, wrote on X: “El-Rufai confesses to wiretapping Nigeria’s NSA on TV.”
“Does it mean that he and his collaborators have wiretapping facilities? This should be thoroughly investigated, and punishment meted out. El-Rufai is not too big to face the wrath of the law.”
The call followed El-Rufai’s interview with Arise Television anchor Mr. Charles Aniagolu, in which he alleged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission had procured the Department of State Services to abduct him.
El-Rufai claimed the ICPC had become a personal tool of the NSA, insisting Ribadu “made the call and ordered” his arrest. On how he knew this, he said: “He made the call, because we listen to their calls. The government thinks that they’re the only ones that listen to calls, but we also have our ways. He made the call, he gave the order.”
When asked if he tapped the NSA’s phone, El-Rufai replied, “Someone tapped his phone.”
On being reminded that wiretapping is illegal, he added, “I know, but the government does it all the time… they tap our calls all the time without a court order.”
Onanuga said the comments were a bold admission of unlawful surveillance and stressed that El-Rufai and collaborators must be held accountable under the law, highlighting concerns over private surveillance networks targeting top officials.
