The National Emergency Management Agency has coordinated a multi-agency response following Saturday’s fire outbreak at Singa Market in Kano State.
The agency disclosed that the fire was reported at about 4:30 p.m., affecting sections of the busy market, where thick smoke and intense flames posed serious risks to lives, property, and adjoining structures.
According to a statement posted on its official X handle, the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, immediately activated the agency’s Kano Operations Office upon receiving reports of the incident.
“Upon receiving reports of the incident, the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, activated the Agency’s Kano Operations Office, which immediately deployed a response team to the site,” the statement said.
NEMA noted that several emergency organisations joined efforts to contain the blaze, including the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, the Fire Unit of Aspira Nigeria Limited, the Fire Unit of Dangote Group, the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
The agency stated that sustained firefighting efforts had significantly reduced the intensity of the fire, with the situation gradually coming under control. However, responders remained on ground as of Saturday evening to ensure full containment and prevent further spread to nearby structures.
