IKWECHENGH BACKS REAL-TIME E-TRANSMISSION OF ELECTION RESULTS
By Aishat Momoh. O.

A member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Alex Ikwechegh, has declared strong support for real-time electronic transmission and collation of election results directly from polling units, describing the reform as critical to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
Ikwechegh expressed his unequivocal backing for the proposed amendment to Nigeria’s electoral framework, acknowledging that divergent views are natural in public policy debates but insisting that technological innovation remains the surest path to sanitising the country’s electoral system.
“This is 2026. We are no longer in 1945. We should embrace growth and progress,” he said. “I am for electronic transmission, real-time collation. It is the only way Nigeria and its political system can be truly sanitised and ensure that the people’s votes count.”
The lawmaker warned that continued reliance on manual collation creates loopholes for manipulation and could undermine democratic gains achieved over the years.
Dismissing concerns about limited network coverage in some remote areas, he argued that innovative technological solutions could bridge connectivity gaps without jeopardising the integrity of the entire electoral system.
“Let us not put the entire country’s electoral system under jeopardy because of a few pockets of constituencies said not to have service,” he added.
Ikwechegh noted that the House of Representatives would harmonise its position with the Senate after a thorough scrutiny of the proposed amendments. He urged political actors to prioritise national interest over partisan considerations, stressing that electoral reforms should serve future generations rather than short-term political advantage.
On the 2027 general election, Ikwechegh said his political future would be determined by the wishes of his constituents in Aba.
“If my people in Aba say they want me to continue providing quality representation and dividends of democracy, why not? I am very much willing to offer my services as the chief servant of the people of Aba,” he said.
The lawmaker also paid tribute to former Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika, who recently turned 70.
He described Lt. Gen. Ihejirika (rtd) as a patriotic Nigerian whose years of service brought pride not only to Abia State and the South-East but to the entire nation.
