A Nigerian-American mathematician and educator, Akinyemi Agbede, has formally declared his intention to run in California’s 2026 gubernatorial election, promising a leadership style anchored in data and measurable results.
Agbede, who holds a doctorate in Mathematical Analysis from the University of Cambridge, said his academic background has equipped him to navigate complex public policy issues with precision and clarity.
“Mathematics trains you to approach challenges methodically and craft practical, evidence-based solutions. California deserves leadership rooted in facts and accountable outcomes,” he said in a Friday interview.
He outlined education reform, economic growth, technological innovation, and social equity as central pillars of his campaign, stressing that long-term investment in these areas is vital to preserving California’s competitive edge.
“We need to improve our schools, broaden economic prospects, foster innovation, and make equity a tangible reality for every Californian,” he added.
Agbede also underscored the importance of inclusive representation, noting that his candidacy sends a message that public office is accessible to individuals from all backgrounds.
Early feedback, he said, has been positive, particularly among voters seeking a fresh, analytical approach to governance.
“This campaign is about shaping a future that benefits everyone. Through transparency, collaboration, and resolve, we can make that vision possible,” he said.
His bid is being described as historic, as he becomes the first Nigerian-American to pursue California’s governorship. His campaign team says it will prioritise outreach to a wide range of communities across the state.
