TINUBU NOMINATES TAIWO OYEDELE AS MINISTER OF STATE FOR FINANCE

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Dr. Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, subject to Senate confirmation.
The nomination was conveyed to the Senate in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Oyedele replaces Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State — her third portfolio in the current administration. She previously served as Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment before her appointment to the Finance Ministry.
Until his nomination, Oyedele chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, inaugurated in August 2023 to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system. The committee delivered four executive bills consolidating over 60 taxes into fewer than 10 statutes.
The reforms, which took effect on January 1, 2026, introduced key measures including zero income tax for Nigerians earning N800,000 or less annually and exemptions for small businesses with turnover below N50 million from company income tax, capital gains tax, and development levy. Other provisions include tax deductions for companies hiring new workers, wage increase incentives for low-income employees, and a five-year corporate tax holiday for agricultural enterprises.
A native of Ikaram, Akoko, in Ondo State, the 50-year-old economist and accountant holds a Higher National Diploma from Yaba College of Technology and a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University. He has also completed executive education programmes at leading global institutions.
Oyedele spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. He is currently a professor at Babcock University and a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.
If confirmed by the Senate, Oyedele is expected to oversee the implementation of the tax reforms he championed, working alongside the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, as the government pushes forward with revenue and fiscal reforms.
