The Oyo State Police Command has foiled a highway robbery along the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Expressway and arrested a suspected armed robber during a joint operation with local vigilantes.
The development was disclosed in a statement on Monday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at Egbeda Village via Ogbomoso, where a joint patrol team of police operatives and local vigilantes encountered suspected armed robbers who had blocked the highway.
The suspects reportedly stopped a tanker loaded with diesel driven by Surajudeen Sulaiman and dispossessed him and his motor boys of their belongings.
“A gun duel ensued between the fleeing hoodlums and the police patrol team, during which one of the suspects, later identified as Dere Yahaya, aged 32, was apprehended,” the statement said.
Other members of the gang escaped into the bush with suspected bullet wounds, prompting security operatives to launch a bush-combing operation and a manhunt to apprehend them.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Femi Haruna, commended the swift response and bravery of the operatives and local security partners involved in the operation. He also appreciated the support of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, in strengthening highway and community policing nationwide.
The police noted that the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Expressway has become a hotspot for auto crashes, hijackings and armed robberies in recent times.
The latest arrest follows a similar operation in February 2026 in the Ogbomoso area, where police recovered goods valued at ₦31.75 million from another criminal gang.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the Oyo State Call Response Centre toll-free line 615 or the command’s control room numbers 08081768614 and 07055495413 during emergencies.
