A yet-to-be-identified vandal suspect has been electrocuted while attempting to tamper with a power facility owned by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited in Enugu.

The incident occurred at a substation located on Independence Avenue in the Independence Layout area of the city.

The Head of Communications of the company, Emeka Ezeh, who confirmed the development on Tuesday, described the incident as unfortunate.

According to him, the lifeless body of the suspect was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday within the premises of the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation.

Ezeh explained that the deceased, alongside accomplices, had reportedly succeeded in loosening two intermediate cables from the facility and was attempting to remove a third when electricity supply was suddenly restored, leading to his electrocution.

He called on customers to remain vigilant and collaborate with the company to curb acts of vandalism, which often disrupt electricity supply.

“Vandalism remains a major challenge that cannot be effectively addressed without the active support of customers, who are critical stakeholders,” he said.

Ezeh noted that such acts significantly affect consumers, stressing that damaged infrastructure often leads to prolonged outages in affected communities.

“It is a battle we must all fight collectively because once these installations are vandalised, customers served by them are severely impacted,” he added.

He expressed hope that the incident would serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar criminal activities.

“The death of this young man, who paid the ultimate price with his life, should serve as a warning to others,” he said.

The remains of the suspect were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police and deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital morgue.

Power infrastructure vandalism continues to pose a major challenge to stable electricity supply in Nigeria. According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria, 131 cases of infrastructure vandalism were recorded across its network in 2025.
