Several military and police personnel, as well as civilians, lost their lives in a deadly ambush by gunmen in Giro Masa community, Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, on Tuesday night.

While the exact number of casualties among security operatives remains uncertain, two residents were confirmed dead, according to local sources cited by the media.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers had been active in the community and surrounding areas before they were traced to a construction company’s premises. Acting on intelligence from residents, troops were deployed to the location but were ambushed on their way.

During the assault, the gunmen reportedly set two military gun trucks ablaze.

A resident, who spoke anonymously, described the incident as chaotic and deadly.

“The gunmen entered the village and were heading towards the construction company yard. We alerted security personnel, but they were ambushed,” the source said.

Another resident recounted the panic that followed the attack.

“It was frightening. People ran in different directions as the gunmen opened fire on the soldiers and burned the vehicles,” the resident said.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Shanga LGA, like other parts of Kebbi State, has experienced intermittent attacks by armed groups in recent years, targeting both security operatives and civilians.

Such attacks often involve ambushes along highways and in rural communities, with perpetrators typically escaping into forested or difficult terrains.

Security agencies have continued to carry out joint operations to curb the violence, although challenges related to terrain, intelligence gathering, and mobility have hindered full containment.
