The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a dispatch rider who was fatally struck by a fully loaded HOWO diesel tanker under the Cele Bridge corridor of the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.
In a statement signed by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the tanker, bearing registration number RBC 38 XF, was said to have “violently rammed into the dispatch motorcycle,” trapping the rider beneath the vehicle and killing him instantly.
LASTMA officials at the scene swiftly cordoned off the area using safety cones and caution tape to prevent secondary accidents and protect other road users. The tanker was subsequently impounded, while the driver reportedly fled upon realising the severity of the incident.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ijesha Division arrived at the scene, took over security, and commenced an investigation. The agency confirmed that the deceased rider, the impounded tanker, and the damaged motorcycle were handed over to the police for further inquiry and prosecution.
The victim’s remains were later recovered from beneath the tanker and transported to a morgue in Yaba.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the tragedy as “deeply distressing” and extended condolences to the bereaved family. He also urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash and ensure justice is served.
