An emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is underway at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, as party leaders continue efforts to reconcile internal factions ahead of the planned national convention.

The meeting, presided over by the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee and the Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees, is the third held this week. Discussions have focused primarily on matters concerning the party’s planned national convention under the Abdulrahman Mohamed-led caretaker committee.

At a similar meeting on Wednesday, the Turaki-led faction expressed openness to reconciliation, noting positive signs of progress toward a truce. The caretaker committee, which enjoys the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reiterated its willingness to reconcile, stipulating that the convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 must go ahead.

Notable attendees at Thursday’s meeting include Turaki, Wabara, former Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu, former Kano State governor Ibrahim Shekarau, and former minister Jerry Gana. Turaki revealed in his opening remarks that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State sent apologies for his absence but assured that the Bauchi governor was expected to attend.

Turaki further stated that members would receive updates on the reconciliation process during a closed-door session. He emphasized that the party leadership is working diligently to ensure the PDP remains united and positioned for the 2027 general elections.

The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to heal internal divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party ahead of a critical period in the country’s electoral calendar.
