The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has called for strategic support for two to three indigenous airlines to emerge as Nigeria’s national flag carriers.
Kuku made this known during the first-quarter Business Breakfast Meeting of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative, noting that the move would strengthen the aviation sector and enhance its global competitiveness.
According to her, developing strong local carriers capable of operating at a national level would significantly boost both passenger and cargo traffic, while unlocking greater economic value across Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
She explained that the proposal forms part of broader reforms being implemented by FAAN to improve airport operations and enhance passenger experience nationwide.
Kuku also revealed plans to deploy advanced technologies, including upgraded airfield lighting and the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS), aimed at improving safety and operational efficiency across airports.
“These initiatives are designed to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem and support growing demand across passenger and cargo segments,” she said.
The FAAN boss emphasised that sustained investment in infrastructure and the development of local airline capacity would be critical to building a more resilient and competitive aviation industry in Nigeria.
