World football governing body FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Federation following anti-Muslim chants during a recent international friendly between Spain and Egypt.

The incident occurred at the RCDE Stadium, where a section of fans reportedly chanted “Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim” during the March 31 match.

“FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings today against the Spanish FA for the incidents in the friendly against Egypt,” the organisation confirmed.

The development adds to a growing list of discrimination-related incidents in Spanish football. Vinícius Júnior, a forward for Real Madrid, has been repeatedly subjected to racial abuse in recent years.

Spanish authorities have also reacted strongly, with police launching investigations into what they described as “Islamophobic and xenophobic” chants. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the behaviour as “unacceptable,” stressing that a minority of individuals should not tarnish the country’s image.

The Spanish Football Federation also denounced the chants, while Spain forward Lamine Yamal, who is Muslim and featured in the match, criticised the incident as a “lack of respect” by individuals he described as “ignorant and racist.”

FIFA’s disciplinary process will determine any sanctions against the Spanish federation following the incident.
