ANAMBRA DEBUNKS VIRAL REPORTS OF GOVERNMENT HOUSE STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE

By: Balogun Ibrahim
The Anambra State Government has dismissed reports alleging that a structure within the new Government House collapsed during a heavy rainstorm on Thursday evening.
Social media had been awash with claims that buildings in the Government House complex gave way due to alleged poor construction following the downpour.
However, in a statement issued on Saturday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Christian Aburime, clarified that no part of the Government House structure collapsed. He explained that only some sections of barricade partitions erected outside the facility—about 20 metres from the perimeter fence—were affected.
According to him, the damage was caused by strong winds and thunderstorms during the storm, which also impacted properties in private residences across the state.
The statement noted that misleading reports suggesting structural failure within the Government House were false and intended to misinform the public. It emphasized that no building within the Government House premises was affected.

Aburime added that the Anambra Capital Territory Development Authority has already visited the site and commenced remedial work to rebuild the damaged barricade sections. He further stated that additional engineering measures would be introduced, including improved wind flow design, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The government also condemned what it described as fake news circulating on the issue, accusing its promoters of attempting to politicize a natural weather event.
It urged residents to disregard the reports and continue supporting the administration’s development agenda.
