Damilare Oloyede, New Media aide to Ogun West senator and APC consensus governorship candidate Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has defended the party’s consensus arrangement, describing it as a calculated step to prevent internal conflict.

In an interview on Thursday, Oloyede said the move had strengthened party unity and reinforced its structure, noting that major stakeholders and former aspirants had rallied behind a single candidate in what he called a rare development in Ogun State politics.

He also downplayed the chances of opposition parties in the 2027 elections, arguing that the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress lack the organisation and grassroots strength to challenge the APC effectively in the state.

Adeola emerged as the party’s consensus candidate during a stakeholders’ meeting held on April 14, 2026, attended by Governor Dapo Abiodun, Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and former governors Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun, among others.

Oloyede said the alignment of the governor, former governors, and aspirants behind Adeola reflects a collective commitment to securing victory for the APC.

“Consensus helps to avoid crisis. Instead of wasting energy on internal contests, the party has chosen to unite and present its strongest candidate,” he said.

Although Adeola has yet to formally declare his candidacy, Oloyede noted that widespread endorsements within the party demonstrate growing confidence in his leadership.

He reiterated that opposition parties do not currently pose a serious threat, describing the PDP as weak and the ADC as lacking presence in the state.

“I don’t think there is any formidable opposition in Ogun State at the moment. The PDP appears inactive, and the ADC is not sufficiently grounded to win public support,” he added.

Oloyede also linked the consensus decision to the need for continuity, saying the APC aims to build on the achievements of Governor Abiodun’s administration.

“The party is focused on sustaining the progress made under Governor Abiodun’s ‘Building Our Future Together’ agenda. We need someone who aligns with that vision, and Senator Adeola fits that role,” he said.

He added that Adeola is well-positioned to advance the state’s development agenda while aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Oloyede called on party members and residents to support Adeola, stressing that unity within the APC would be crucial to winning the 2027 governorship election.
