Troops of the Nigerian Army have dismantled a camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State, recovering suspected remains of two soldiers killed in 2022.

The operation was carried out on Thursday along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area by troops of the 82 Division as part of a targeted clearance mission.

According to a statement issued on Saturday, the troops acted on credible intelligence and advanced on a suspected IPOB/ESN hideout, where they came under heavy attack.

“Demonstrating resilience, the troops decisively engaged the terrorists, successfully repelling multiple ambushes and forcing the criminals to flee in disarray,” the army said.

Following the clearance of the camp, troops conducted a search of the area and discovered shallow graves, from which suspected human remains were recovered.

The army said the remains are believed to be those of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and killed by the group in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

It added that the remains have been secured for forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities, while efforts are ongoing to liaise with their families for proper identification and burial arrangements.

The army said the operation highlights its commitment to ensuring justice for fallen personnel and degrading criminal networks operating in the South-East.

It also assured that similar operations would continue until peace is restored in the region, urging residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information.
