TINUBU REMOVES NMDPRA CHIEF SAIDU MOHAMMED, NOMINATES RABIU UMAR AS SUCCESSOR

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the dismissal of Mr Saidu Mohammed from his role as Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), citing public interest.
He has also nominated Mr Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new Chief Executive of the NMDPRA, with the appointment pending confirmation by the Senate.
The announcement was contained in a State House press release issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the removal of Mr Saidu Mohammed from his position as Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), citing public interest.
The statement noted that the decision was made in accordance with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and is intended to enhance regulatory efficiency within the midstream and downstream petroleum sector, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The President has also nominated Mr Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new Chief Executive of the NMDPRA. Umar is an experienced executive with over 25 years of professional experience spanning the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors. He holds a degree in Accounting from Bayero University and is an alumnus of Harvard Business School.
The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation. In the interim, the most senior official in the NMDPRA will oversee the agency’s affairs in an acting capacity.
The Presidency expressed appreciation to the outgoing Chief Executive for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours, while reaffirming its commitment to appointing capable leadership in key regulatory institutions.
It also reiterated that the administration remains focused on strengthening leadership across critical agencies to promote energy security, sector reform, and sustainable economic growth.
The leadership change follows the exit of the pioneer NMDPRA Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, who stepped down in December 2025. He was succeeded by Saidu Mohammed, who later assumed the role of Authority Chief Executive.
