Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has redeployed Dr Johnson Sinikiem as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner for Rivers State.

Sinikiem previously served as INEC REC in Rivers State before taking up similar positions in Cross River and Edo states.

A post on the Rivers State INEC official social media platform on Wednesday showed the new REC meeting with the commission’s management and staff following his return to the state.

The meeting took place at the commission’s headquarters on Aba Road in Port Harcourt, where Sinikiem also interacted with members of staff.

Confirming the development, the Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity at INEC in Rivers State, Geraldine Ekelemu, acknowledged Sinikiem’s return as the new REC.

When asked whether he had officially resumed duty, Ekelemu responded briefly, saying, “Yes.”

Addressing staff during the meeting, Sinikiem thanked them for the warm reception extended to him upon resuming office.

He urged workers to demonstrate renewed dedication, teamwork, and collaboration in carrying out their responsibilities.

Speaking on behalf of the management and staff, the Administrative Secretary, Dr Angela Ebhodaghe, appreciated the REC for convening the meeting and assured him of the workforce’s full support and cooperation.

She also encouraged electoral officers to ensure efficient service delivery during the ongoing claims and objections exercise, which commenced on April 29 across various INEC Local Government Area offices.

Earlier, Rivers INEC had announced the exercise in a statement signed on behalf of the REC by Geraldine Ekelemu.

According to the statement, following the completion of the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, the verification programme would run from April 29 to May 5.

It explained that the exercise would allow individuals who registered, transferred, or updated their voter information to verify their details and correct any omissions or errors.

The process also gives members of the public the opportunity to object to the inclusion of foreigners, deceased persons, or underage individuals in the preliminary voters’ register for possible removal.

INEC urged all registered voters to participate actively in the exercise as part of efforts to ensure a credible voters’ register ahead of the 2027 elections.
