Prices of rams, food items, and other essential commodities have surged sharply as Muslims across the country prepare for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The festival, during which animal sacrifice is carried out as part of religious observance, has led to increased demand for livestock nationwide.

In Kaduna State, a survey of several markets revealed an abundance of rams, goats, and chickens for sale, but at significantly higher prices than expected. Many buyers expressed concern over the sharp increase, noting that costs vary widely depending on the size of the animals.

At the Central Market, for instance, rams are reportedly selling between N300,000 and N1 million, depending on size and quality.

While chickens are sometimes considered an alternative for those unable to afford rams, their prices have also risen. A three-month-old chicken now sells for between N20,000 and N30,000, while a bag of rice has climbed to about N80,000 as of Thursday, May 14, 2026.

The Senior Manager of the Rams Sellers Association, Alhaji Bulama, attributed the price increase to a shortage of rams and ongoing insecurity, which he said has disrupted animal rearing in many communities.

He explained that many livestock farmers have abandoned their villages due to attacks, reducing supply and increasing production costs, especially feed.

Similarly, a trader at Television Market, Mallam Musa Adamu, said transportation costs have also contributed significantly to the price hike, as animals are now sourced from distant locations due to reduced local rearing.

Despite the rising costs, some buyers remain determined to celebrate. A resident, Dr. Musa, said he intends to purchase a ram regardless of the price, noting that while the sacrifice is important, individuals should only spend what they can afford.

He advised Muslims not to go into debt for the celebration, stressing that Eid is an annual event and should be observed within one’s means.
