The Anambra State Government has approved the celebration of the annual Imo-Awka Festival scheduled for May 23, 2026, while cautioning participants to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid actions capable of disrupting public order.
The Imo-Awka Festival, a cultural celebration observed by the people of Awka in honour of the god of fertility and purification, had earlier faced uncertainty after the state government requested a change of date due to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) primary elections fixed for the same day.
The government had expressed concerns that hosting both events simultaneously could overstretch security resources across the state capital.
However, in a letter issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and signed by the Commissioner, Udorji Amedu, the government granted approval for the festival to proceed following assurances from the leadership of the Awka Development Union and the Ozo Awka Society regarding adequate security arrangements.
The letter, dated May 21 and addressed to the President General of the Awka Development Union, with copies sent to the traditional ruler of Awka, His Royal Highness Gibson Nwosu, stated that the approval was in line with the government’s commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the people.
The government, however, outlined strict conditions for the celebration, including a ban on blocking public roads or obstructing vehicular and human movement within Awka during the festival.
It also prohibited masquerades and participants from brandishing dangerous weapons or engaging in acts of harassment, intimidation, flogging, or violence against residents and visitors.
According to the statement, all participants are expected to conduct themselves in a lawful and decent manner reflective of the cultural values of the Awka people.
The state government congratulated the traditional ruler and residents of Awka on the celebration and urged them to ensure the event remains peaceful and orderly.
