The United States Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, has announced her resignation, citing the need to support her husband, Abraham Gabbard, following his diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.

In a resignation letter shared on her verified X account on Friday, Gabbard said she informed President Donald Trump during a meeting at the Oval Office that she would step down from office effective June 30, 2026.

She expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve as intelligence chief over the past year and a half, describing the decision as a deeply difficult one.

“At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” she wrote.

Gabbard said her husband had stood by her throughout their 11-year marriage, including during her military service, political campaigns and tenure in government, adding that his strength had sustained her through various challenges.

“His strength and love have sustained me through every challenge,” she said, adding that she could not in good conscience allow him to face his illness alone while she remained in a demanding national security role.

Despite her resignation, she said she was committed to ensuring a smooth transition before leaving office to avoid any disruption in leadership or operations.

“I am fully committed to ensuring a smooth and thorough transition over the coming weeks so that there is no disruption in leadership or momentum,” she noted.

She also thanked the American people for what she described as the honour of serving in the intelligence leadership position.

During her tenure, Gabbard oversaw reforms within the U.S. Intelligence Community, including cost-cutting measures, restructuring of programmes, and the declassification of historical government records, including materials linked to the Trump-Russia investigation and assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Her office also reported expanded counterterrorism operations, including the blocking of thousands of individuals linked to narco-terrorism and the expansion of the federal terror watchlist in 2025.
