Nigerian forward Henry Onyekuru has revealed his joy at returning to
regular football, having joined Turkish Super Lig champions
Galatasaray on loan.
The Everton player spent last term at Anderlecht in the Belgian top
flight but he saw little playing time in the second half of the
campaign and arguably missed out on Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup squad as
a result.
Since joining Gala from the Toffees last month, on a deal which will
run to the end of the 2018/19 season, Onyekuru has been seeing plenty
of action and has notably scored in friendlies against Club Africain
and Valencia.
In his first interview with Turkish media, the 21-year-old told
Fanatik that he is happy to be back playing football on a regular
basis.
“I feel great, I’m injury free now and feel at 100 percent,” he
revealed, before explaining that staying at Gala for a longer than a
season could be an option, but the decision ultimately rests with his
parent club.
“Will I stay on at Galatasaray? Everything is possible in football but
this is something for Everton to decide.
“I have a contract with Everton, if I were to leave it would have to
be in both our interests.
“I am happy here, everyone has been so welcoming, the staff, the
coaches and the fans.”
Onyekuru also rejected the claims that Valencia will buy out his loan
move to the Turkish team and bring him to Spain.
“I’ve heard the Valencia rumours,” he explained. “I am solely focused
on Galatasaray next season, these are matters for my agent but I can
say there is nothing happening.”
Onyekuru also revealed that he turned down offers from the Premier
League and Germany’s top flight to move to Galatasaray, and feels his
ideal position is as a centre forward.
“I had offers from the Premier League and Bundesliga,” he said. “My
priority was playing time, I wanted to join a big club where I would
play regularly.”
He added, “My original position is a No 9 but I can play on the right
and the left wing.”
