Greek top-flight football referees began an open-ended strike Thursday in protest at an assault on a colleague.
With this we are showing our outrage,” the referees said in a statement sent to the national football organization and local media. The stoppage targets the Greek Super League.
A day earlier masked assailants had beaten a referee in front of his home in Larissa, in central Greece. He suffered head and leg injuries and was released from hospital on Thursday.
The attackers meanwhile remain unidentified.
It was the latest of incidents plaguing Greek football and the 27th attack on a referee since 2009, radio Sport-FM reported. In March, the Super League was suspended because of hooligan violence.
