Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has criticised referee Danny Makkelie for overturning a penalty decision during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in Wednesday’s Champions League clash.

Makkelie initially awarded Arsenal a penalty before VAR advised him to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, after which he reversed the decision.

Reacting on Final Score, Keown argued that the incident did not amount to a “clear and obvious” error that warranted VAR intervention.

According to him, VAR was never intended to interfere excessively in referees’ decisions, insisting the on-field official should have been allowed to stand by his original call.

Keown also questioned why the referee was instructed to consult the screen, suggesting the decision may have been influenced by pressure from the atmosphere and Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

He maintained that there was clear contact in the challenge and described the tackle by Hancko as clumsy.

Arsenal had taken the lead through a first-half penalty converted by Viktor Gyokeres, but Atletico Madrid equalised 12 minutes into the second half through Julian Alvarez.
