Bayelsa State:Resign If You Can’t Pay Salaries, NLC Calls on Governors

Mr. Bipre Ndiomu, chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bayelsa State chapter, has called on state governors who cannot pay workers’ salaries to resign.
Ndiomu made the call on Tuesday during a march in Yenagoa by workers over the recent killing of two labour leaders during a peaceful protest in Nasarawa State.
“State governors should live up to their responsibilities or resign from their positions,” he said.
The workers marched through parts of the Alamieyeseigha Way and the Lambert Eradiri Road before they were stopped near the Banquet Hall of Government House, Yenagoa, by a cordon formed by the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Condemning the restriction by security operatives, Ndiomu, who led the protest, explained that the solidarity march was in sympathy with the two Nasarawa victims of police brutality.
He called for a minute’s silence in honour of the dead comrades, predicting that a time would come when security agencies would be overwhelmed by citizens’ protests for their worsening living condition in the country.
“We have been restricted. We don’t have guns, but we have always said that when the need arises, the needful will be done. The people we represent will one day come out on their own and no police will be able to stop them.
“Remember that these two comrades were killed in cold blood. Other comrades were equally injured. They are still in the hospital receiving treatment.
“Today, their family members are dying. Their family members are suffering. Of course, they have been suffering before now, they have not been comfortable just as we have not been comfortable,” he said.
Ndiomu noted that it was only in Nigeria that politicians received bogus salaries without any consideration for ordinary workers, declaring that “we are not salves”.
He explained that the NLC in Bayelsa had started re-opening negotiations with the state government to pay full salaries to civil servants instead of the current 50 per cent.
Ndiomu demanded unbiased investigation into the killing of the two Nasarawa State workers with a view to meting out sanctions to those responsible for their death as well as payment of compensation to their families, among others.
