ALL EYES ON MBAPPE AS REAL MADRID FACE MAN CITY, HAALAND IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SHOWDOWN
Agency Report

Real Madrid will be banking on Kylian Mbappe’s scintillating form when they host Manchester City and star striker Erling Haaland in a high-stakes UEFA Champions League clash at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.
Madrid head into the crunch encounter under mounting pressure after managing just two wins in their last seven matches, a run that has exposed growing cracks in Xabi Alonso’s still-developing project. Some sections of the Spanish media have even speculated that a defeat to City could put Alonso’s job at risk.
Despite the team’s struggles, Mbappe has remained Madrid’s shining light this season, scoring 25 goals in 21 games to top the scoring charts in both La Liga and the Champions League. Time and again, the French superstar has rescued underwhelming performances with moments of lethal brilliance.
Manchester City, meanwhile, arrive in Spain powered by the relentless form of Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker has netted 20 goals in 20 games across all competitions and, alongside Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, stands as Mbappe’s main rival for the title of the world’s most feared forward this season.
Beyond the club rivalry, the two stars are also set to clash at international level next summer when France face Norway at the 2026 World Cup in the United States. Their duel at the Bernabeu will offer a tantalising preview.
City under Pep Guardiola continue to be structured around Haaland, with most attacking moves designed to end with the ball at his feet in front of goal. At Madrid, however, Alonso’s attempt to impose a new tactical identity has faltered amid selection battles, injuries and dressing-room tensions — leaving Mbappe as the only truly untouchable figure.
Spanish daily AS summed up Madrid’s predicament after their recent 2-0 home defeat by Celta Vigo, writing: “The team is a flat, uninspired group clustered around Mbappe, whose goals merely mask the crisis. If he takes a day off, there’s no alternative.”
After a slow start following his move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, Mbappe hit top form in 2025, scoring 55 goals for club and country — just four shy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record 59 in a calendar year.
Even as Madrid’s internal issues deepen, Mbappe has emerged as a unifying leader. Last month, following a frustrating 1-1 draw at Girona, he publicly challenged his teammates to “show who we are” and “change this dynamic,” a call Alonso praised for its leadership value.
A surprise 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao briefly lifted spirits, but Madrid quickly slipped again with defeat to Celta, underlining their inconsistency.
Now, against the might of Manchester City and the unstoppable Haaland, Madrid once more turn to Mbappe to paper over the cracks. For Alonso, under growing scrutiny, even that may be enough — for now.
