Raphinha scored twice as Barcelona secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in their UEFA Champions League encounter on Tuesday, ending the English side’s unbeaten run in the competition.

The five-time European champions took an early lead through Lamine Yamal before Raphinha added two goals in the second half to seal the win.

The victory helped Barcelona recover from their previous Champions League defeat to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain and maintain their push for a place in the top eight of the league phase.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa put up a strong fight in the opening half but were eventually overwhelmed by Barcelona’s attacking quality in the final third.

The Champions League anthem was not played before kick-off as a mark of respect for Tenerife striker Jesus De Miguel, who died on Tuesday morning following an on-pitch collision during a Spanish second-division match the previous day.

Barcelona took the lead in the seventh minute after a costly defensive error from Villa.

The Spanish champions pressed their visitors high up the pitch, forcing Joao Gomes into a poor pass inside his own penalty area. Yamal intercepted the ball and calmly beat goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to put the hosts ahead.

Villa responded with attacking pressure, as Matty Cash saw a powerful effort deflected narrowly wide before Gomes had another attempt blocked by Joao Cancelo.

Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia also came off his line to deny Nicolas Jackson after the striker was sent through on goal.

Suzuki later kept out an effort from Anthony Gordon as Villa struggled to play out from the back under Barcelona’s relentless pressing.

Garcia was called into action again to deal with an attempt from Johan Manzambi as both sides traded attacking opportunities.

Barcelona doubled their advantage early in the second half when Fermin Lopez set up Raphinha, who displayed quick footwork before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Cancelo came close to extending the lead with a powerful effort that sailed just over the crossbar before turning provider for Barcelona’s third goal.

The defender delivered an excellent cross with the outside of his boot, allowing Raphinha to finish from close range and complete his brace.

The Brazilian winger, who has established himself as Barcelona’s preferred centre-forward this season, took his tally to 19 goals across all competitions.

Yamal later fired narrowly wide as the hosts searched for a fourth goal, but Barcelona comfortably saw out the contest to secure their first Champions League clean sheet in 19 matches.
