A British medical worker who contracted Ebola while participating in the response to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has been evacuated to London for specialist treatment, the UK government has confirmed.
The government disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the unnamed British citizen had returned to the country after testing positive for the virus.
The medic is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Free Hospital in London, which houses a specialised high-level isolation unit designed to manage cases of highly infectious diseases.
According to the government, the facility operates strict safety measures and protocols to prevent any contact between infected patients and members of the public.
Renu Bindra, Deputy Director of the All Hazards Public Health Response Team at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), assured the public that the risk of transmission to the wider population remained low.
Meanwhile, Africa’s latest Ebola outbreak has claimed more than 5,300 lives, with the majority of fatalities recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the continent’s leading public health agency.
In a related development, Nigeria reported an Ebola case last month involving a 42-year-old Swiss woman whose husband works at the Swiss Embassy in the country. She was subsequently evacuated to Geneva for medical treatment.
