IMO APP CHIEFTAIN RAISES ALARM OVER DESTRUCTION OF PARTY PROPERTY BEFORE 2027 ELECTION

A chieftain of the Action Peoples Party (APP), Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, has condemned the alleged destruction of the party’s facilities in Imo State, describing it as a politically motivated attack on the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Amadi said the incident represents a serious threat to democratic values, political tolerance, and the right of citizens and political parties to participate freely in the electoral process.
In a statement issued on Monday in Owerri, the APP stalwart said residents of Imo State woke up on Sunday, July 19, 2026, to news of the vandalisation of the party’s facilities at its Iwuanyanwu Glass House State Secretariat.
He alleged that the destruction of the party’s official signage and other infrastructure was not an isolated act but part of a deliberate campaign to intimidate opposition parties and restrict democratic participation ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to Amadi, democracy can only thrive in an environment where political parties are free to canvass for support, citizens can exercise their rights without fear, and elections are decided by ideas, vision and performance rather than violence or intimidation.
He argued that the attack amounted to a violation of the constitutional rights to freedom of association, expression and political participation, adding that the use of intimidation reflects political insecurity rather than strength.
The APP chieftain, who is also the party’s Imo East Senatorial candidate, maintained that acts of harassment and destruction would not discourage the people of the state from exercising their constitutional right to elect leaders of their choice.
Amadi urged security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, to investigate the incident and ensure equal protection for all registered political parties, stressing that every citizen should be able to participate in the democratic process without fear of intimidation or victimisation.
He added that justice, respect for the rule of law, tolerance and peaceful political engagement remain essential for credible elections and sustainable democratic development.
