IRANIAN PRESIDENT CONDEMNS TRUMP’S CRITICISM OF POPE LEO XIV

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has condemned recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump targeting Pope Leo XIV, describing them as insulting and unacceptable.
Trump had on Sunday criticised the 70-year-old pontiff, stating he was “not a big fan” and accusing him of being “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” The comments followed the pope’s criticism of ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The U.S. president also alleged that the pontiff held views supportive of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, adding, “If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”
Reacting in a post on X on Monday, Pezeshkian strongly rebuked the remarks, describing them as an affront not only to the pope but also to religious values.
“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, I condemn the insult to Your Excellency on behalf of the great nation of Iran, and declare that the desecration of Jesus, the prophet of peace and brotherhood, is not acceptable to any free person,” he stated.
The exchange has sparked widespread reactions globally, further heightening tensions amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
The development comes against the backdrop of strained relations between the U.S. and Iran following recent military confrontations. Earlier this year, the United States, in collaboration with Israel, launched missile strikes on Iran under Operation Epic Fury, prompting retaliatory actions by Tehran across parts of the Gulf region.
Efforts to ease tensions through a reconciliation meeting held in Islamabad over the weekend reportedly ended without a resolution, leaving diplomatic relations between the parties uncertain.
