LOOKMAN CAN ONLY JOIN A ‘SUPER TOP CLUB’ ABROAD – ATALANTA CEO
BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
Atalanta Chief Executive Officer Antonio Percassi has disclosed that Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman will only be permitted to exit the organization this summer if the proposal originates from a “super top club” beyond Italy.
In a statement disseminated through a post by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Monday, Percassi clarified that a previous arrangement was established with Lookman, permitting him to transfer in 2025 under certain stipulations.
“The pact with Lookman was made one year ago when we rejected €20m from PSG,” Percassi was quoted as saying.
“We informed him: we will permit you to depart in 2025 for a premier club, but not for one in Italy. Currently, the circumstances with Inter have changed… and, as always, the decision lies with us.”
Lookman transferred to Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022. He has netted 52 goals in 117 appearances for the Italian club.
His remarks arise amid escalating tensions between him and Atalanta, as the Super Eagles winger has accused the Serie A team of failing to uphold commitments concerning his possible summer transfer.
In a forcefully articulated message shared on Sunday, Lookman confirmed he has officially sought a transfer following what he characterized as “numerous months of unfulfilled promises” and unjust treatment from the club.
Despite the conflict, the 27-year-old conveyed his ongoing respect for Atalanta, emphasizing his dedication throughout his tenure at the club, particularly during their triumphant 2023/24 UEFA Europa League campaign.
“I have devoted absolutely everything. Not solely as an athlete but as an individual. I have consistently donned the jersey with pride and endeavored to represent this club and the city of Bergamo with sincerity, zeal, and commitment,” he stated.
Lookman achieved his first career hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin.
