MURDER TRIAL OF OSUKE VILLAGE RESIDENT STALLS AMID ALLEGED INTERFERENCE BY OGUN TOP GOVT OFFICIAL
The trial of five murder suspects involved in a deadly incident in Osuke village, Ado-Odo, Ota, Ogun State, has been thrown into disarray due to claims of interference by a high-ranking government official. Police in Lagos arrested the suspects in connection with the fracas, but efforts to further investigate the case have reportedly been obstructed, raising questions about potential political influence.
The suspects, identified as Hammed Olayiwola (45), Taofeek Ajasa (47), Samuel Ajose (39), Segun Elijah (54), Segun Dada (54), and Elijah Adeogun (43), were apprehended at Zone 2 in Onikan, Lagos, after an investigation was triggered by a petition from Lanre Balogun and Co., on behalf of the Ileke family descendants. The petition accused Adeogun Elijah and others of criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, attempted murder, and murder.
The case relates to an armed invasion of Osuke village, where the suspects allegedly used sophisticated weapons to kill Saheed Jinadu, 24, and breach the peace. Police later recovered two AK-47 shell casings and other evidence from the scene. However, after transferring the case to Abuja for further investigation, police sources claim their progress was hindered by interference from a powerful government official in Ogun State.
This official, reportedly a member of the church involved in the land dispute at the center of the violence, allegedly used their position to impede police efforts. Sources indicated that the official blocked attempts to obtain critical documents, such as court papers for the suspects’ remand, autopsy results, and forensic analyses of the recovered ammunition.
The situation escalated when Ogun State’s Attorney General, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN, issued a statement accusing the investigating officers and the Assistant Inspector General of Police in Lagos of being manipulated by land grabbers. Ogungbade condemned the apparent misconduct and criminal activity within the police force, noting that the investigation had been derailed to perpetuate injustice and falsely accuse innocent individuals. As a result, the Ogun State government officially discontinued the charges, calling the case a miscarriage of justice.
With the investigation now stalled, questions are being raised about the extent of political interference in the legal process and the potential implications for the victims’ families seeking justice. The ongoing situation highlights the challenges in holding powerful figures accountable, even in the face of alleged serious crimes.
