OTU: UNIVERSITY PROJECT FOR CROSS RIVER NORTH IS STILL ALIVE

Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has assured stakeholders in the Northern Senatorial District of his administration’s commitment to addressing pressing challenges in infrastructure, education, electricity and economic development.

Otu gave the assurance during a high-level engagement with political leaders and other stakeholders at the Ogoja Local Government Council headquarters.

The meeting focused on key concerns affecting the district, including the poor state of roads and bridges, the proposed university, the revival of the Okuku International Market, electricity supply and measures to stimulate economic growth.

Responding to the issues raised by stakeholders, the governor said projects with immediate and significant impact on the lives of residents would be given priority.

“We have listened to you, and we understand the concerns that have been expressed here. Government must listen to the people and work towards solutions that will improve their lives,” Otu said.

He placed particular emphasis on the rehabilitation of critical bridges linking communities, noting that the collapse of such infrastructure could isolate communities and disrupt economic activities.

On the proposed university for Cross River North, Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to establishing the institution, saying the project remained an important part of his administration’s promise to the people.

“The university is still very much alive. It is part of the commitment we made to our people, and we remain committed to it,” he said.

The governor explained that the establishment of the university required compliance with regulatory standards, adding that significant progress had already been made.

Otu also pledged to revive the Okuku International Market, describing it as a strategic economic asset for the region. He said road projects around the market axis were being pursued to reconnect farmers, traders and buyers and boost commercial activities.

On electricity, the governor said his administration was engaging relevant authorities to address the power challenges facing the northern part of the state, stressing that reliable electricity was essential for industrialisation and economic growth.

He further expressed optimism that Cross River would regain its status as an oil-producing state, saying this would create new economic opportunities and strengthen the state’s revenue base.

Otu also called for greater unity and inclusiveness in the organisation of the ruling party, assuring stakeholders that commitment and performance would remain key considerations.

“Your concerns are our concerns, and your development is part of the future we are building for Cross River,” the governor said.
